Exerpts from Biographies

Cantonments are not something new in history, nor peculiar to this subcontinent. They go back to Persian, Greek, and Roman times, when armies come into being as separate entities. The only societies where the Army has not a separate entity are those where the whole society has been a fighting society like Changez Khan and his Mongols. The necessity  of the creation of an environment is not confined to the Armed forces. University Campuses, monasteries, police lines and Wapda colonies are other examples.

One of the things which used to worry me was that some of the men might use the very specialized training given to them to commit  dacoities and other forms of violence after going on pension.
